Moosin' Around: A Musti-Disciplinary Analysis of Maine Humor
; 2006
Plainfield, VT

Position: Student: Researcher, Writer, Videographer
Traced the development of Maine humor from Colonial-era regional dialect humor to the stand-up comedy of Tim Sample; examined the Yankee stereotype and the ways in which its contradictory character has responded to changing socio-economic realities. Following the work of Prof. Edward Ives, this paper discussed New England dialects and the oral tradition of storytelling mimicked in Maine humor as a form of entertainment, while asserting that the stereotypes ubiquitous in Maine humor were constructed in a tourist milieu. Presented in February 2006 at Goddard College along with a short video documentary on current trends in Maine humor.
